Besides granting time off from school or work, a snow day often means endless adventures filled with indoor and outdoor fun for the whole family. While some enjoy delicious soup, great movies and perhaps a cup of hot chocolate, many of us love to step out among the white winter snow to put our imaginative minds to work.  From creatively sculptured mounds of snow to classic carrot-nosed, stick-armed snowmen, there’s something greatly rewarding about creating a masterpiece made of snow…even though we know it won’t last long. Check out these photos of some of the most amazing and awesome snowmen that we’ve ever seen!

Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite!

I recently traveled and needed to stay in a hotel, as most of us do from time to time.  I make it a habit to check around the bed, mattress, box spring, head board, etc for signs of bed bugs.  Signs include, the bugs themselves, nymphs (baby bed bugs) and fecal spots (bed bug poop) which is easily spotted since it is digested blood and it stains.  See the pictures below for visible evidence of all of the above!

I notified the front desk and they were very apologetic, of course.  They don’t want you making a big fuss, telling people or placing a law suit which now happens often.  The funny thing or not so funny thing about that night is that when I told them, they immediately offered a new room…I inspected the new room and guess what?  I found more evidence!

Now most people would just run out of there.  But, I am somewhat of a bed bug “expert” so I know this is not uncommon anymore.  I accepted the third room of the night.  I completed another inspection and found the room to be clean.  Just in case, I placed my belongings in the bathtub for safe keeping, bagged my clothes I was wearing, and settled in for a good night’s rest.

I was a bit paranoid itchy at first, but it all worked out.  And in the end, they didn’t charge me for the room and said they hoped that was the end of it. (Code for “are you going to sue us?”)  I assured them that it was. (Code for, “as long as I don’t find any when I get home.”)

Bottom line is this…it doesn’t matter how nice the hotel is or isn’t.  Bed bugs feed on us, not filth.  They are hitch hikers and cannot be stopped.  Always check your mattress before bedding down in ANY hotel.  Enjoy your stay and, oh yea, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite!

Hey Scooby, where are you?

As I sit and watch Shaggy and Scooby with my four-year-old, I am reminded that they were the original ghost chasers.  Now we have Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, Celebrity Ghost Stories, Paranormal Investigators and several other ghost hunting shows.

There are also many groups, Facebook pages and societies who practice the “art” of hunting ghosts.  Maybe this is a way to add fun into the lives of plumbers by day, ghost hunters by night.  And why at night?  Is it for dramatic television or could it be that ghosts only come out at night?  Do they sleep during the day?

Isn’t it convenient that the ghost hunters try to decide if the ghost in question is intelligent or residual energy?  Well, if they don’t respond to my questions, they must be residual energy going about the routine they are destined to repeat for eternity.

I like these shows.  But does anyone else not hear the words that are being interpreted on the recording devices?  Sometimes they are quite clear, but other times it’s a stretch.  And the connections they make between the “words” they hear and the meanings they interpret.  It’s fun to believe, but, ah, a little help here.

Anyway, the show is over and the Mystery Machine needs an oil change.  Speaking of change, someone please donate some new outfits to these crazy kids!  Thanks.
