Chipotle Mexican Grill is good. Good food that is, but they also have quick service. Did they find a way to make service faster? Or did they find a way to raise revenue? Or are they aiming to get rid of the penny in the US?
The Star-Ledger’s Karen Price Mueller investigated and found that in Chipotle’s busiest markets — such as New York City and New Jersey — its registers round down or up depending where the coin falls nearest to a nickel.
A spokesperson for Chipotle told the Star-Ledger that the company employs the practice to curb long lines and create greater efficiency in these high-volume locations.”The idea is simply to limit the possible combinations of change on cash transactions to keep the lines moving quickly in high volume areas,” spokesman Chris Arnold tells the newspaper. “It was never our intention to have a policy that was confusing or misleading,” he told NJ.com. (according to an article on Huff Post)
Canada got rid of the penny in March. Is Chipotle onto something? Should the US consider getting rid of the penny? Does it waste time to make that change? I heard it actually costs more than a penny to make a penny!

Interesting article!
Thanks. What do you think? I’m actually ok with the rounding up or down. What about getting rid of the penny?
One cent has little value these days but any move like this will almost certainly be inflationary and to the detriment of the consumer I think.
I guess we can watch Canada and see what happens there. Thanks!
Whoops,what happened to a penny earned…a penny saved…..”change “….will happen
Thanks for putting your two cents in!
I don’t mind them rounding up or down since it speeds up the process. As for whether we should keep or get rid of the penny… I don’t know. I kind of like the penny. I wish we’d go to dollar and two-dollar coins the way they do in Canada, but it seems most of the U.S. population doesn’t agree with me.
We have had silver dollars. But now people just collect them. Thanks for sharing.
Rounding down to the nearest nickel is unAmerican … but rounding up? Woo hoo!!!
Never noticed this about Chipotle, but will take notice the next time I;m there. BTW – I have a celebration post tomorrow – a party – so I hope you attend … and your friends are welcome as well.
Thanks Frank!
Hey … party at my place … don’t miss out!
I’m here now Frank! So many people I didn’t see you yet! Thanks again.
