OK so it’s not Beetle Juice and no he won’t show up if you say his name three times. But this bugger showed up outside of my house today. He is about an inch long and very ferocious. I don’t see them this size that often. Can anybody identify him? Or at least name him for me!
Sorry, no idea, Bert maybe. Haha 🙂
Bert is a lovely name. If no other suggestions, Bert it will be. Thanks!
Ground beetle of some kind, genus Pterostichus or perhaps Harpalus. Submit the image to Bugguide.net to see if they can narrow it down to species.
Thank you for the recommendation to bug guide. Wanna give him a name?
It looks like it might be a Dung Beetle http://www.cirrusimage.com/beetles_Copris_fricator.htm. Now as for a name..let me think on it!
I checked your link. Not a dung beetle. Look at the split back and the antennae are different. Good thought though. Now, how about a name? 🙂
Bessbug – Odontotaenius disjunctus. Sort of related to dung beetles and stag beetles. They live communally in rotten logs. Always impressive to see.
Thank you Ted. I did find a similar picture on another blog which showed the larvae as well. Quite interesting little critters!
Interesting bug. It’s so nice to have an entomologist help ID.
There are a lot of great people on wp who are willing to help.
His name should be Bob.
Bob the beetle. Sounds like Bob the builder! OK, got a Bert and a Bob. Very imaginative and creative people out there! 🙂
i suspect this fellow is the one which stinks real bad when it gets crushed.
I’m not going to try, but that would be a stink bug! I think this fella is the Bess Bug as indicated in another reply. It’s a wood boring beetle. Thank you for your guess. What should I name him?
how about black beauty…..i love the shimer black sheen although it is certanly one of my fav insect.it stinks bad!
Yes. The shiny black and perfect ridges are really cool looking. Black Beauty got it.
Wow that is some beast!
As for a name I suggest John, Paul, Ringo or George. Or even all four 🙂
The most perfect beetle names for sure! Thanks.
ok, don’t know what it isbut double back don is his name…lol
🙂
I was going to suggest Bob, but I see it is taken – thus I’m stuck.
Well that just means two votes for Bob the Beetle! Thanks.
Whatever he is, he’s kinda cute. I vote for Paul (since he was considered the cute one). 🙂
Two votes Bob, one for any Beatle and one specifically for Paul and a couple other single votes. Thanks all.
We don’t know for sure it’s a “he”, in which case everybody has missed the obvious choice – “Bessie”!
Ted, you are totally and completely correct! In fact I am going to officially name you the winner. Bessie it is and, of course, the name fits! Thanks.
